Ask an Archeologist Question

Q: When did humans first arise in Samoa?
A: The actual date is still widely debated between archaeologists, but Samoa was first colonized by the Lapita at approximately 3000 years ago. The only Lapita site recovered in Samoa to date was recovered in 1973, when Lapita dentate-stamped pottery was accidentally discovered near Mulifanua, Upolu. Subsequent archaeological analysis may be difficult for this time period, because the Ferry Berth Site is actually located immediately off the northwest coast of Upolu under several feet of lagoon water and cemented coral due to the slow process of island submersion occurring on Upolu.
